On Saturday 26th of August we celebrated the Polish Book Day at our school. Students and teachers came dressed as their favourite book characters and it was beautiful to see all the colourful and very creative costumes throughout the day. Our guest authors, Alicja and Mitch Hume, shared their book „A long time ago in Poland” with our students and talked about how the book came to life, what it means to be a writer and how much time it takes to create book illustrations. It was an extremely inspiring and engaging presentation and our students had a chance to ask all the burning questions. We also had the pleasure to listen to our students recite Polish poems as part of our annual reciting competition, and we are truly impressed by their talents. Our judges, Joanna Borkowska-Surucic and Marta Kieć-Gubała from Teatr Fantazja, certainly did not have an easy task having to choose the winners of the competition. The job wasn’t much easier for the Polish artist, Basia Zielinska, who together with Alicja Hume were judges in our art competition this year. Over 20 amazing artworks inspired by the Polish legend of Lajkonik were submitted, and they certainly exceeded our expectations. We would like to congratulate all the winners and thank everyone who participated in both competitions. Clearly, a Book Day wouldn’t be complete without the book character parade. And what a parade it was! Afer we gathered downstairs, we were joined by Ula Lang and the Lajkonik dancers in their traditional costumes. But it was the appearance of our special guest, the real Lajkonik from Cracow, that put the biggest smile on all our faces. We danced and we sang together as, once again, we celebrated Polish culture and traditions in the most fabulous way.
